How to Measure Your Bra Size at Home – The Right Way!

Let’s be honest—finding the perfect bra can feel like searching for a unicorn. One size fits great in one brand but completely different in another. Some bras dig in, some gap, and some just make you wonder, Is this even my size?!

If you’ve ever felt personally victimized by bra shopping, don’t worry—you’re not alone! The good news? You can measure yourself at home and get one step closer to a bra that actually fits and feels amazing. Grab a measuring tape, take a deep breath (literally), and let’s find your perfect size!

But Before We Start, Here's What You Need to Know: Bra Sizing Isn’t Universal (And Why That’s Annoying).

If you’ve ever tried the same size in two different brands and had totally different results, here’s why: there’s no universal bra sizing system!

Each lingerie brand uses different patterns and sizing curves, meaning a 36C in one brand might fit like a 34D in another. This is why it’s always a good idea to check the brand’s size chart before buying—and even better, get virtual fitting advice (which we happily offer at IND Collections!).

NB: If your measurements are in between two different sizes, we recommend rounding up for a more comfortable fit.

Step 1: Measure Your Band Size – The Backbone of a Great Fit

Your band is the real MVP of your bra—it does 80% of the heavy lifting! If your band isn’t right, your straps and cups won’t be either.

✨ How to measure:

  • Wrap a soft measuring tape snugly around your ribcage, right under your bust.

  • Make sure the tape is parallel to the ground—no tilting!

  • Exhale completely before taking the measurement (we want the smallest possible number for accuracy).

Got it? Great! Now let’s find your cup size.

Step 2: Measure Your Bust Size – The Cup That Holds the Magic

Your bust measurement determines your cup size, and getting this right is the key to avoiding spillage or gaping cups.

✨ How to measure:

  • Wear your current most comfortable, non-padded bra (push-ups and sports bras can throw off the numbers!).

  • Stand straight with your arms at your sides.

  • Wrap the measuring tape around the fullest part of your bust.

  • Keep it parallel to the ground—no dipping or pulling too tight!

Step 3: Find Your Cup Size – The Difference Makes the Difference

Now, it’s time to do a little math (don’t worry, it’s easy!).

✨ How to calculate:

  • Take your bust measurement from Step 2.

  • Subtract your band measurement from Step 1.

  • The difference between the two determines your cup size.

Sister Sizes: Your Secret Weapon for a Better Fit

Did you know you actually have more than one bra size that fits you? Welcome to the world of sister sizes!

✨ Sister sizes are bra sizes that hold the same cup volume but different band sizes.

  • If your band feels too tight (but the cup fits right), go up a band size and down a cup size.

  • If your band feels too loose (But the cup fits right), go down a band size and up a cup size.

Example: If you usually wear a 38C, your sister sizes are 36D (for a snugger fit) or 40B (for a looser fit).

Sister sizing is a game-changer, especially if your “usual” size isn’t available in a particular brand or style.

What to Look for in a Well-Fitting Bra

Now that you’ve got your size, how do you know if your bra actually fits properly? Here’s what to check:

1. The Band – The True Support System

  • The band should feel snug but comfortable—not digging in, but not riding up your back.

  • Raise your arms. If your bra rides up, it’s too big! Go down a band size.

  • If it feels too tight or leaves red marks, go up a band size.

✨ Fun fact: 80% of a bra’s support comes from the band, not the straps!

2. The Cups – No Spilling, No Gaping

  • If you spill over, your cups are too small—go up a cup size.

  • If there’s gaping or wrinkling, your cups are too big—go down a cup size.

  • The center gore (the part between the cups) should lay flat against your chest. If it doesn’t, the cups are too small or the band is too big.

3. The Straps – Keep Them in Check

  • Straps should sit comfortably on your shoulders—not digging in, but not slipping off.

  • If your straps fall down, they may be too loose, or your band might be too big.

  • If they dig into your shoulders, you’re likely relying too much on them for support (your band should be doing the heavy lifting!).

The Bottom Line: The Right Fit Changes Everything

A well-fitting bra isn’t just about looking good—it’s about feeling good. The right bra can improve posture, boost confidence, and make every outfit look better.
