The Truth About Lingerie: Misconceptions  Debunked

1) I know my size - any bra will fit.

Did you know that bra sizes differ widely among brands? There is no real size standard and each brand uses its own sewing patterns, measurements and designs, resulting in constructions that can be quite different from one another. It's always recommended to refer to each brand's individual size chart.

3) A good bra will last you forever

We all wish that our favorite bra would last a lifetime, but the truth is that even the best quality bras have an expiration date. Fibers naturally deteriorate over time. Neglecting to properly care for your bras and over-wearing them can speed up this process, leading to loss of shape and support.

Additionally, changes in our bodies or weight can affect how a bra fits and feels over time.

5) Padded bras make you look bigger

It's a common misconception that many people believe a padded bra will make you look bigger, but this is not the case. Instead, padded bras give a smoother appearance and a rounded shape, helping to enhance your natural curves. Only a push-up bra can give the effect of a larger bust. Most padded bras are designed to provide comfort, support, and confidence, not to make you look bigger.

7) Your bra should be loose (or tight)

A bra should never be too tight or too loose. It should fit snugly, but not be uncomfortable. You shouldn't feel it on your body and it should never leave red marks. If the band is too loose, it will provide little to no support.

9) You should wear white under white

Don't make the mistake of wearing a white bra under a white shirt - it's a fashion faux pas that's hard to ignore. Instead, opt for a beige or neutral color that's closer to your skin tone for a seamless look.

2) I can't be more than one size

Not everyone fits into the same size, and that's why sister sizes exist. Most women can wear 2 or 3 different sizes, making it easier for you to find a comfortable fit. Finding your sister size means you'll have access to additional sizes that can hold a similar volume of breast tissue, ensuring comfort and support that lasts all day.

4) Bra support comes from the cups and shoulder straps

The secret lies in the band! The band is responsible for distributing 80% of the weight of your bust across your back, with only 20% being supported over the shoulder straps.

6) "D" is a big size

Why are we convinced that D cup as a "big" size? For years, designers and retailers only provided bras in a limited size curve, creating only "standard sizes" in most ranges and leaving everyone to believe that anything bigger would be a "speciality" size. This left many women with few options and a bad body image. As a result, many women wear the wrong size and are hesitant to try larger cup sizes, which has created a negative stigma about fuller-busted women. The most common cup size is actually a D or DD/E.

8) A 34C and 36C is the same thing

One of the most common sizing mistakes we encounter is assuming that 34C and 36C are the same size. In fact, as band sizes increase, cup volume also increases. This means that a 36C is actually one cup size larger than a 34C. Your equivalent size to a 34C would actually be a 36B. Read more about it in Sister Sizes.
